Springs to Know

Spring has just started here at Blue Mountain and with it comes different opportunities as well as challenges. With only a few weeks left to the season here, we want you to make the most of it.

Temperature: We’ve been blessed this year with a ton of snow, yet not that bad of temperatures. Forecasts are showing most days here are going to be in the 30’s with the potential to reach the mid 40’s. This is a great opportunity to shed a few layers and enjoy the sun. April can see a huge swing in temperatures though, so we always advise to bring enough layers, and then take them off and put them on when needed.

Conditions: Like we said before we’ve had a tremendous year for snowfall here. This has provided us with some great skiing and snowboarding conditions, but it does come with its only challenges. With the warmer temperatures, more snow is melting during the day, and with freezing temperatures at night, this can create a layer of ice to start the day. We suggest waiting until after our groomers have hit all the slopes finishing up around 10:00. The great thing is the sun is staying out longer still giving you plenty of time on the mountain.

Gear: The rising temperatures can lead one to want to hit the slopes in some shorts which we’d have to advise against (until the Hawaiian Summertime Weekend Bash that is). You might be fine at first but after falling a few times that melting snow on your body can cool you down quick. Waxing your skis and snowboards is also crucial. Most spring slopes have wet snow rather than powder most other times of the year. By apply that wax, it will create a waterproof layer to your skis or boards which will help with that thicker snow. And lastly, we suggest bringing a pair of shades and some sunscreen with you, trust us you’ll thank us later.
